Extraordinary Antique Red Baotou Suiyuan Rug; InvNr. DG-0142

Extraordinary Antique Red Baotou Suiyuan Rug; InvNr. DG-0142

Period: 1900

Description: This striking rug from Yulin in Baotou Suiyuan is rare in both, colour and size. Yulin was famous for making some of the most exquisite rugs in China. But normally, they came in much smaller sizes to fit the Chinese houses at the time.
When Chinese merchants became more affluent towards the end of the nineteenth century, they were looking for ways to show their wealth without presenting it ostentatiously to outsiders and attracting the attention of greedy officials. One way for them to do this was investing into costly interior decoration, scholar’s objects, furniture and rugs. Only the selected few invited into their houses would be allowed to appreciate the beautiful objects displayed within.
This rug would have been a special commission for a wealthy private home of a merchant or a wealthy official. Only a handful (if at all) of manufacturers would have had a loom large enough to make this rug and very few extraordinary pieces remain today.
The striking red was rarely used in Baotou-Suiyuan as the most prevalent colour was indigo blue. The very powerful (almost energetic) colour of this piece symbolises luck and happiness.

The already impressive piece features a central medallion with a peony garland around an abstract blue Shou (longevity) centre. The central field is decorated with scattered peony flowers. A delicately drawn outer latticework border consists of abstract archaic coin designs.

This extraordinary piece needs an equally impressive home of great class.

Antique Baotou Inner Mongolian Pictorial Rug With Cranes; DG-0247

Antique Baotou Inner Mongolian Pictorial Rug With Cranes; DG-0247

Period: 1900

Description: A warm red tone dominates this charming Inner Mongolian pictorial rug.

Chinese pictorial rugs exude a certain charm and often appear like a framed window, offering a glance into a different world. The scene is set by a central rock with bamboo, peonies and other flowers growing behind it. The sun is partially hidden behind a cloud whilst six cranes, five standing and one in the air, gather and butterflies join them. A peony adorns every corner. It feels like something is about to happen but the spectator is left to imagine what that will be, adding some mystery to this beautiful scenery.

The main colour of this rug is a warm red tone with brown, blue and beige as secondary colours. The picture takes up the entire centre and two subtle borders, a narrow meander and a geometric floral pattern, provide the frame.

The use of red in this type of rug is quite unusual and makes it stand out nicely. The wool is very strong yet soft, typical for Inner Mongolia, and a pleasure to touch.

This piece is not just attractive but comes with a wealth of positive energy embodied in the decorative elements. The warm red field, the colour being a symbol of longevity, depicts a wealth of auspicious symbols. The field is decorated with a central blue shou medallion, the symbol for longevity. Five bats, symbolising the five blessings, surround the shou medallion. The peonies on both sides symbolise the wish for prosperity. The corners are decorated with geometric fret patterns. The red field is surrounded by two indigo blue borders, the main swastika border symbolising the wish for good fortune.

Stunning Rare Large Format Chinese Baotou Rug; InvNr: DG-0026

Period: Circa 1920

Description: Stunning Baotou Suiyuan carpet with shades of blue – from indigo to midnight – as the main colour.

Inner Mongolian rugs of this quality and size are very rare and difficult to find, especially in such excellent condition. Originally made for the Chinese elite of the late Qing Dynasty - wealthy merchants, influential officials and members of the imperial household - only a handful of workshops in Baotou had looms to make large format pieces like this and there are none today.

The geometrical design with central medallion, allover patterned field with pearls and swastika design has a mesmerizing effect. Spandrels with meander design and abstracted bats. The four borders consist of a pearl string border, a meander border, geometric border and a simple blue outer border.

A unique connaisseur's piece!

Period: Circa 1900

Description: A simple latticework rug from Baotou - with the charm of a Tibetan chequerboard rug.
This rug has a very simple yet stunning design - a warm grey-brown background overlaid with a (petrol)blue latticework brocade pattern. The natural brown comes from a very soft, un-dyed Inner Mongolian wool, a rare feature in this type of rug. The intricate latticework leaves space for imagination: the pattern consists of little square spaces filled with flowers but connoisseurs of antique Tibetan rugs could almost spot a rare, highly abstract leopard spot pattern.

Fantastic Antique Chinese Kang Rug with Abstract Organic Design; InvNr. DG-0228

Period: 1920

Description: This unusual Chinese rug design is more reminiscent of European Art Nouveau than traditional Chinese designs.

Whoever conceived this design has certainly proven their artistic talent. The design challenges the viewers to explore their feelings and come up with their own interpretation of the pattern. For me, the outer border is reminiscent of organic Art Nouveau shapes, depicting vines in a dark green with little red flowers. The central field has a wave like pattern, with pronounced leaf like shapes and round ornaments. I will leave the interpretation to the viewers.

One of a kind rug with pleasant colours and bags of creative energy.

Size: 285cm x 405cm

Size: 191cm x 125cm

Antique Baotou Sitting Rug with Auspicious Symbols; DG-0245

Period: 1920

Description: The dark indigo blue combined with a warm rusty red characterises this harmonious and visually pleasing Baotou sitting rug.

Size: 64cm x 120cm

Size: 422cm x 307cm

Note: Both ends were replaced at some point in the past, as this rug was originally part of a much longer runner, probably in excess of 30 feet.

Size: 163cm x 65cm

Charming Open Field Baotou Rug With Bamboo; InvNr. DG-0222

Period: 1920

Description: This indigo blue Baotou-Suiyuan rug has an open field design with an array of flowers and bamboo.

Baotou has an unrivalled expertise in using the indigo root to dye the excellent Inner Mongolian wool. The results are apparent in this beautiful piece. The wool is soft yet strong and the colour is a dark blue yet shows subtle variations that create a strong lustre.
The central medallion shows peonies in lighter shades of blue. On each side of the medallion are five flower elements, each one different with the most beautiful designs. Lotus flowers, bamboo, plum blossoms, lilies and more are executed with great skill and detail and seem to be floating on the open field.

Geometric Baotou Inner Mongolian Sitting Rug With Brocade Pattern; InvNr. DG-0143

Once this piece has gripped your imagination, just let it run wild and see where it takes you.
